Today at Wrapped in Foil we feature The Tree Lady: The True Story of How One Tree-Loving Woman Changed a City Forever by H. Joseph Hopkins and illustrated by Jill McElmurry. The book explores the life of ground-breaking horticulturist, Kate Sessions.
Kate Sessions (1857-1940) is now called the Mother of San Diego’s Balboa Park because she gathered and planted hundreds of trees there over her lifetime. She turned the park from a barren, dusty desert where cows wandered into a lush haven. In addition, she was also a teacher, scientist and visionary.
H. Joseph Hopkins heard about Kate Sessions during a trip to California and decided her story deserved to be told. Indeed it does. Pick up a copy and see what “Kate did.”
